Marilyn Monroe

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you can appreciate them when they’re right, you believe less so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." - Marilyn Monroe

What I'm thankful for...

Me & my sister, Gabri

A couple of days ago I was asked what I'm thankful for... I shared that in 1997 we lost our home to a fire. Despite the fact that we (very sadly) lost our animals, we didn't lose any of our family members. I often reflect on that time period with a sense of gratefulness and gratitude instead of sadness and hurt... it seems strange, right? How could something so terrible bring a feeling of such positive emotion? Well, when you find out that my sister and brother were supposed to be home that night in bed, underneath the staircase where the fire started, it changes your perspective, doesn't it? They both decided to sleep over at their friend's houses. That (split) decision saved their lives. That's pretty heavy, right?

When you almost lose family members, other things we used to be upset about, suddenly don't seem to matter. To put it simply, it puts things in (the right) perspective. I'm so blessed to have shared all these years with my family, and dear friends... some people have much less time to bond, laugh, love, and act stupid together. Cheers to many, many more. I love you all, and you better know who you are. If you think someone you love may not know it this holiday season, go grab them and look them in the eyes, like a cheesy movie, and tell them! At the risk of sounding overly dramatic or dark, but not caring if you think so, you just never know when it'll be your last opportunity... so go on and get you some good lovin'!

In the spirit of Love tonight, J

On the move to Colorado!

It's official - we're moving to Colorado next year for a little adventure! Austin's been fun & wonderful, and we plan on coming back... but as of May 2012, our plans are to plant our roots in the new mountainous terrains of Boulder, CO for a year (or two). ;)

All my film projects thus far will be in post by then, I'll have my esthiology license, and a new screenplay awaits... Dear New Script, I haven't met you, yet, but I love you, the snow, the fireplace, and hot chocolate.

Cancer is Serious Business

A lot of people are effected by cancer daily, as have been in my family over the years, so I'm always on the look out for ways we can boost our immune systems & change the patterns that adversly effect us, so that we can prevent these conditions.

Here's the latest that was shared with me by a friend whose mother's been battling cancer for years... it's called Ip6 and here's the LINK so you can read about it.

In addition, if you haven't heard of Dr. Burzynski, you should check this documentary out: LINK. It's called Cancer is Serious Business.

It was one of the most powerful & inspiring documentaries I'd watched since Crazy Sexy Cancer. It makes us further question the FDA, and even health orgs and "the system" that we feel are looking out for us. Sad, and angered, I am choosing to use this energy as fuel to spread the word. If there's a cure for cancer ANYWHERE OUT THERE, damn it, we ALL need to know about it!!!!!

And last but not least, if you're a big tea drinker like me, check out these illness-fighting Essiac herbs my friend, Briana, told me about - I'm in!

Skin Balance

Right now, I'm adding skin care to my resume and my life by attending the Aveda Institute in Austin. I've always been interested in the largest organ of the body - SKIN. And on animals, too. My oldest pug, Admiral, suffers from skin allergies. And if something irritates him more that usual, (a shot, season, etc.) he's miserable. It just breaks my heart. Recently, he had an episode so I was doing research online and I found SKIN BALANCE. It's for humans and animals. We're on our first week, and it has to build up in the system. BUT, he seems to be doing better already!

I'm a big believer in the results of chinese (herbal) medicine and acupuncture, so if the herbs don't work, then maybe my WILL might. My mother's doggie has suffered a life time, too, and been on tons of medications/shampoos/dog foods, so we're always on the look out for a remedy.

I truly believe that the majority of skin conditions are contributed to what we put in our body. However, there are outside forces that play a major role, too, and we can't be blind to that.

If your animal is suffering, you might try this... and if he/she seems stressed invest in some rescue remedy. It's good to calm them down when they feel anxious or overwhelmed by a condition.

Read the link below to see how this herbal formula works. Happy, healthy skin wishes to ya! xo J

ps. I'll be posting skin care tips each week from now on!!! there are SOOOOO many, and I can't wait to share them with you! pugs & kisses! J

15 minutes of fame: What would you do with it?

Just listened to Film Courage with Alex Ferrari, and he touched upon something I thought was so important: Be ready to capitalize on things while you're hot. Whether it be a film, or another art project, we should always be thinking forward. It's not to take away from the present, but when you become "hot" in hollywood, so to speak, it's a fickle significance.

To me, it's like 15 minutes of fame. What are you going to do with your minutes? How are you going to extend your spotlight? And furthermore, how are you going to turn the superficial nature of the experience into something more profound? Fame is only worth something if you do something meaningful with it. :) J

Creating is Liberating

Thank you, Universe, for supplying us with everything we need to live happily and healthily. I understand that out of most 'negatives' comes the opportunity to learn, grow, and expand as a human being.

I am most thankful for my family, friends, animals, and the gift that's given to us daily for free - to be creative individuals.

When we create from a loving space we are free from EGO, selfishness, or burdened thoughts - if we put our souls into our crafts, in return, we get something much more than money. We get to be kids again - recirculating the purest form of ourselves into the most liberating, sophisticated portrait that can be interpreted a million different ways.

Anti-inflamatory foods!

Inflamation is likely at the heart of every disease. Here's a good article I found that explains why we should eat anti-inflamatory foods regularly, followed by a list of food items to make it convenient for you. Happy, healthy living! J

Anti-inflammatory foods, if eaten regularly, can reduce inflammation in the body and bring the problem under control. This page contains a list of anti-inflammatory foods that if incorporated into your regular diet will help bring a balance to inflammation in your body. Try and feature some kind of anti-inflammatory food into every meal that you eat, and eliminate pro-inflammatory foods from your diet all together. People who have done this often describe noticable relief from previous discomforts and a greater ability to control their weight. CONTINUE WITH ARTICLE.

Film reviews: Antichrist, The Human Centipede, and Food Matters

As a filmmaker, I believe it's my job (plus, I love it!) to watch movies. Here are a couple of fun, twisted and disturbing ones for your demented guilty pleasure! In addition, I've included one of my recent favorite documentaries, Food Matters, to break up the disturbia, and push us towards a path of enlightenment and better health.

I usually rate movies highly when I want to watch them over and over again. These are the exceptions. :)

First up: Antichrist
Wow, did they go there. Let me elaborate. My husband and I sat down to watch it, and I have to admit, we weren't paying as much attention as we should have. We had three pugs pulling for our attention, and it was hard to hear them speaking (was it just us?). So, we turned up the volume, and I pulled out the dental floss. Upon pulling it out, I was subjected to Dafoe's penis and balls flapping around (sorry, guess I should've warned this is not for the light or faint of heart). Let's just say I pulled out a lot of dental floss.

The worst disturbia thus far was actually the amount of sex these guys were having. I mean, I'm not against being intimate OR having sex with my partner, but Dafoe's (ok, probably stunt double's) butt was constantly in our faces, and I found myself bursting out with laughter in dark, serious scenes (not what they were going for, I'm sure).

The movie started off jarring, and a little slow. The tone was dark, ominous and consistent of keeping us in the moment, however bazaar. The camera/DP work was quite exceptional, I might add. Really brilliant.

So, we kept watching...

In the third act, I became witness to some of the most horrific imagery I could possibly imagine. Let me give you some examples, if you haven't seen it - SPOILER ALERT - a deer's fetus, the cutting off of a vagina, and bloody ejaculation. Yeah. Not something you want to watch before bedtime!!! Thank God for rescue remedy.

Nevertheless, it was a piece of artistic cinema, and I suppose it's good that I saw it. Whatever the case, it left an impression, and by some filmmaker's standards - that's the whole point.

I'm giving this one an A, because of the acting, and over-all exceptional quality/ look of the film. But let's just say, I won't be watching it again. :)

Moving on: The Human Centipede
You've seen the trailer, right? Whatever you saw, the movie's worse (in a good way, if you like to let your imagination run wild with uncomfortable thoughts). The number one complaint I had from friends was that the imagery wasn't 'in your face' enough. Personally, I kinda liked that it wasn't that graphic, because I was able to stomach it better.

Kinda gave a whole new meaning to being stuck in the middle, right? :)

When the picture came on, I thought it was just another Friday the 13th wannabe (one of my old faves, btw) flick with mediocre actors. I actually started off thinking the acting was bad and that we'd made a mistake by renting it.

Boy, was I wrong.

In both of these cases, the actors were spot on - outstanding, giving deeply committed performances.I have to commend THC on its authenticity and ability to work around the gore, too. I don't think it was as easy as it looked.

AND, in case the idea that these three being surgically connected (i.e., turned into a human centipede) wasn't enough of a treasure, then how it ends makes up for it. It's one of the worst ways you could think up dying. I'll leave it at that, in case you haven't seen it.

I'm giving this one an A for authenticity and acting. But again, I probably won't be watching it again, either!!

And, so that we can leave on a note that's NOT totally stomach turning, let's talk about one of the best (educational) films I've seen recently - Food Matters.

Yes. It. Does.

This film is a gem, if you're concerned with your health or your family's health, and don't know why/if you should take supplements. It's also an eye-opener to what can be done via nutritional therapy, instead of just the conventional benefits we're more commonly exposed to in the US. I highly recommend it for everyone. It's never too late to start living a quality life.

On that note, I'm signing off with love and hope. Happy movie watching! :)
